How do you get over gym anxiety as a newbie? Feel like everyone's watching
How do you get over gym anxiety as a newbie? Feel like everyone's watching
I really want to lift but I get so anxious walking into the weights area. I feel like everyone's judging me for not knowing what I'm doing. How did you all get past this? Or do you just fake it?

I promise you almost nobody is watching. Everyone is far too busy thinking about their own sets, their own form, their own playlist. The spotlight you feel is almost entirely imagined - I felt exactly the same and it faded fast.

Have a plan written down before you walk in. Knowing exactly what you're doing next kills most of the anxiety because you're never standing around looking lost. I still bring my session on my phone.

That actually makes sense, half my panic is not knowing what to do next.

That's the whole trick really. A plan turns it from 'everyone's staring at lost me' into 'I'm here to do these six things and leave'.

Go at off-peak times at first if you can. Mid-morning or early afternoon the gym is calm and you can take your time learning without feeling crowded. Build confidence there, then busy hours won't faze you.

Headphones on, eyes on your own business, and remember everyone in there was a clueless beginner once. The genuinely strong, experienced people are almost always the friendliest - they remember what it was like.

I assumed the big strong people would be the most judgemental, good to hear it's the opposite.

Total opposite. They respect anyone putting in the work, no matter the weight on the bar.

Honestly the people who would judge a beginner are insecure and not worth a second of your headspace. Their opinion says everything about them and nothing about you.
