Lower back pumps during deadlifts - is this normal or a warning sign?

Post by SteelTitan9 »

Early gym crew - quick one. On my heavier deadlift sets my lower back gets a deep pump, almost a cramp feeling in the erectors. No sharp pain, just intense tightness. Is that a normal pump or something I should worry about?

Erector pump is normal, especially on higher-rep or touch-and-go pulls. It's a muscle like any other and it pumps. A pump is very different from pain. What you don't want is sharp, localised or one-sided pain, or anything that lingers the next day.

Good distinction. This fades within the hour and there's no next-day soreness beyond normal.

Then you're almost certainly fine. That's just your spinal erectors working hard, which is exactly what they should do under a heavy bar.

One thing to check though - a big erector pump that becomes a cramp can be a hydration and electrolyte thing too. If you're training fasted at 5am, a bit of salt and water beforehand can take the edge off it.

I am training fasted and barely drink anything before. That could be it.

Try a glass of water with a pinch of salt 20 minutes before next time. Costs nothing and the cramp-like version of that pump often disappears.

Also worth filming a set from the side. If your hips shoot up first and the bar drifts forward, your lower back ends up doing a disproportionate share and you'll feel it. A pump from good leverage is fine, a pump from a rounding back under load is the warning version.

That's the bit I worry about. I'll film today's session.

Bracing is the other piece. A proper 360 degree brace - big breath into the belly, not just the chest - takes a lot of the strain off the erectors and spreads it. A lot of 'back pumps' are really just a weak or absent brace.
