I’m curious how everyone approaches it. Do you start early and make gradual adjustments, or do you prefer a tighter timeline with a more structured plan? And how much does your starting body fat, previous competition experience, and coach’s guidance influence your decision?

How Many Weeks Out Do You Start Your Contest Prep?
Contest prep is one of those things where timing can make or break your experience on stage.
Some competitors start 20–24 weeks out to give themselves enough time for a steady cut, while others prefer a shorter prep depending on their starting condition, division, and goals. The real challenge is getting stage-ready without sacrificing too much muscle, strength, recovery, or sanity along the way.

I’m a fan of starting around 20 weeks out. It gives me time to dial in nutrition without tanking my lifts right away.

For my first show, I’d rather have 20–24 weeks than try to force everything in 12. You need time to learn how your body responds to the deficit, adjust cardio when progress slows, and practice posing until it feels natural instead of awkward.

That’s a solid point!
Having extra time to make adjustments sounds way better than trying to play catch-up during the final weeks.

Around 16–18 weeks if I’m already in decent shape. I keep an eye on weekly averages, gym performance, and progress pics instead of making changes every time the scale jumps.

My biggest lesson was that contest prep isn't just about dropping pounds. I started posing practice way too late last time, and it showed on stage even though my conditioning was pretty good. Now posing starts from week one, right alongside the diet and training plan.

For a first show, I’d build in a bigger buffer. Every body responds differently, and you don't want to sacrifice muscle just because the show date is getting close.

Usually 18–20 weeks, depending on my starting condition. I’d rather keep my training quality high and lose fat at a manageable pace than slash calories and spend the last month feeling completely cooked.
